“Corpus Purgate, Animus Purgate” (Purify Your Heart Along With Your Body).

This water is not only a purifier of the body, but has also become a sacred source into which one can whisper one's most sincere wishes.

Legend has it that anyone who quietly approached the water and passed a wish through their heart would—if their intentions were truly pure—receive a subtle echo from the depths of the Cisterna Votorum as a sign that their wish would come true.

For this reason, the cistern is not an ordinary water source; it is seen as an ancient confidant that has kept people's secret desires, hopes and prayers for centuries.

The story of the Hızırbey Hamam, however, is not limited to the centuries-old history hidden within its stones. Its meaning stems from a profound purpose that permeates the very soul of Istanbul. The bath's journey stretches from the period when Constantinople was transformed into the capital of a new era to 1458, just five years after the conquest.

Establishment and Vision

The bathhouse was built by Hızır Bey, who was appointed by Sultan Mehmed II as the first judge of the city after the conquest of Istanbul.

In the 15th century, the Qadi (judge) was not just a judge; he was the city's most powerful civil authority, effectively acting as both mayor and chief justice today. He was responsible for everything from markets and public order to public safety and city administration.

A Solution Born of Necessity

One of the biggest problems facing the new capital was water infrastructure. As Istanbul grew rapidly, its old and deteriorating water systems were no longer able to handle the strain. Water was now both a precious resource and one that needed to be carefully protected. Consequently, the construction of new, water-intensive private baths was prohibited.

Hızırbey Bath emerged as a solution born out of this very need.
It was built not as a display or an imperial luxury, but for the people, for the common good of the city. Its purpose was clear:
To make the ancient bath ritual, which purifies both body and soul, accessible to everyone in a sustainable manner.

This founding understanding remains at the centre of our identity today.

We are not a palace bath—we are a public bath with a legacy of public service.
That's why, true to our history, we are proud to offer a mixed and inclusive space where everyone is welcomed equally and feels comfortable.
